24. Fate is a Fickle Bitch.

Vivian

‘Have you fought many dragons?’ she asked Rafael as they covered the last few kilometres to Chinrjk’s hideout at a gallop. It would have been faster for her to fly, but in the face of Rafael’s bad mood, she preferred not to remind him that she now had feathers.

‘Of course. I am an ahren from the first circle.’

‘And certainly ancient.’

Rafael gave her a sidelong glance. ‘That too.’ He gripped the reins tighter. ‘When I was young, I earned my spurs on the West front. That is where the dragons’ lairs are and where I have fought dragons before.’

‘That means Chinrjk is not the only one with a dragon as a totem animal?’

‘Not by a long shot.’

‘And why are they hunted?’

‘They have joined the powers of darkness and betrayed Yasat—and this after he had specially created them.’

Vivi nodded. That made sense.

‘Then why have I only seen Chinrjk alone so far? He was either working with the lord or with the mjetra. I’ve never seen him with other dragons.’

‘Chinrjk is a loner.’

‘You know him?’

‘Let’s say I’ve read up on him.’

‘Then I’m surprised the hunter is still a free man.’

‘Yasat never issued an order to arrest him.’

‘Until now.’

‘Before now, he had never invaded Bohous, interrupted an ahren ordeal and allied with Azrael.’

‘No, he only made my life a living hell.’

‘Those were worldly problems. Nothing Yasat is much concerned with.’

‘Except that I’m his chosen one.’

‘He did send you Aurelio several times, didn’t he? Is it the god’s fault if you ignored his help?’

Vivi rolled her eyes. ‘Of course not. Now, don’t be offended again.’

‘Unlike you, I have no feelings.’ She raised an eyebrow but decided not to provoke Rafael further.

‘What is our course of action?’ she finally asked. It was time they took their mission seriously. After all, today, they would arrest a double murderer and bring him to his just punishment. They stowed the horses, so that the mjetra would not hear them come.

Vivi once again tightened the leather straps on the sides of her armour. She blinked as she kept recalling the smell of Chinrjk. Moss, forest and leather.

Her pulse began to beat faster, and her mouth was as dry as dust. Then she saw the signal from Rafael and started running faster. The scent was faint, and Vivi had to concentrate hard not to lose it again. As soon as the dragon realised they were here, he would try to escape.

Therefore, they had to confront him before he managed to leave his cave. In his lair, he would not be able to transform, and a dragon that remained in his normal shell was relatively harmless to ahren.

She followed that scent on and on. It was getting easier now because it hung in the air in clouds. She could almost touch the air right where Chinrjk had been. Vivi only smiled briefly at her incredible senses.

As an ahren, it really was much easier. And she was immortal. She loved that thought. Her thoughts turned sombre. Chinrjk had wanted to take it away from her.
